WATER
TREATMENT

In industrial plants, water corresponds to a significant factor in every process which ranges from cooling water, boiler feed water to pulp & paper industries as well as process water for electronics and pharmaceutical industries. In various industrial facilities, such as those in the field of power generation or the petrochemical industries, boiler plants are often the key component in the production process. Such plants need high water quality, in order to prevent harmful scaling to the machine parts. Shafab has a valuable portfolio of treatment processes including conventional processes to high-performance systems (e.g. membrane processes). Our target is to add the features of reliability and least operating maintenance requirements for our proposed solutions.

Our services range from technology development, design and engineering, procurement and construction to operation and maintenance for both industry and municipalities for water and waste water treatment and furthermore to the oil and gas industries and packages.

Major industrial water treatment plants have been described hereunder

Boiler Feed water is obtained from a wide range of raw water sources. The treatment processes shall corelate the corresponding raw water composition to the required boiler feed water quality through the following solution and systems:

  • Make-up water supplies, e.g. pre-treatment and demineralization and silica removal (thermal or RO desalination and ion exchange)
  • Condensate treatment, e.g. with filtration, anion- cation exchange and mixed bed filtration and degasification
  • Mechanical, thermal and chemical degasification

A condensate polisher filters the condensed water as of the steam generation cycle. They are usually filled up with polymer resins which are used to remove or exchange ions so that the purity of the condensate is maintained at the one of the distilled water level. It prevents premature chemical failure and deposition within the power cycle resulting in loss of unit efficiency and possible mechanical damage to the key generating equipment.
Condensate polishers are important in systems of which boil or make the water condensed to transport or transform thermal energy. These processes remove dissolved (i.e. silica oxides) and suspended matter (ex. iron oxide particulates from corrosion, also called ‘crud’), as well as other contaminants from the water which can cause corrosion and maintenance issues.
Condensate polishing plant typically involves ion exchange technology for removal of dissolved minerals and suspended matter traces.
During the process of steam generation in power plants, the steam cools down and condensate is formed, then, it is collected and used as the boiler feed water. Prior to re-use, the condensate must be purified or “polished”, to remove impurities (predominantly silica oxides and sodium) which can potentially damages the downstream facilities. The CPP process is normally implemented through the following methods:

  • High pressure Mixed bed Exchanger
  • Low Pressure Mixed Bed Exchanger External Regeneration Mixed Bed.
  • Precoate Technology

The condensate deoiling package is used to remove potential hydrocarbon traces from steam condensates. The clean condensates are utilized to feed deaerators in production of the boiler feed water (BFW). Coalescing filter and activated carbon filters are being employed to meet the purpose. Coalescing is one of the separation techniques applied worldwide for liquid-liquid and liquid-gas separation processes.
This technique involves coalescing of small particles or droplets into larger ones by means of barrier or electrical energy. It is one of the most cost effective methods practiced nowadays as compared to salt driers, settlers or thermal / vacuum separators.

Service water is necessary for preparatory processing stages and/or industrial purposes. Typical applications include, e.g. cooling water supply for thermal power stations, petrochemical plants, fire-fighting system waterand machinery cleaning. During the treatment process, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, membrane filtration, full and partial desalination (by softening), reverse osmosis, ion exchange and thermal desalination will be combined or employed alternately. Eventually, service water of pre-defined quality will be the final product of the treatment process.

There are various applications in very delicate industries including food and pharmaceutical industries of which having purified water is vital. SHAFAB is expertized in these kind of industries and practices Flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, membrane filtration, full and partial desalination by softening, reverse osmosis, ion exchange and thermal desalination treatment process techniques according to the water quality requirements.
